Information Technology Summer Internships for
High School and College Students
The SDPBC Information Technology and Maintenance and Plant Operations Divisions annually sponsor student summer internships. In 2016 these concurrent 6-week programs are helping dozens of Palm Beach County students advance their future plans and gain valuable on-the-job experience.
Information Technology interns perform real work assigned and supervised by IT mentors. The pool of applicants for internships shows impressive talent and ingenuity. Past interns have made significant contributions to the District, including building our first mobile application for Android phones and helping to implement the Project Management Office.
Twenty-nine interns were hired from a field of 300+ applicants for IT’s jobs. In addition to receiving compensation, interns receive perks from sponsors that included district-logo shirts, magazine subscriptions and luncheons providing education on career and life skills.
The IT Internship Program gives students intensive hands-on experience with sophisticated systems and computer applications. Students are exposed to all aspects of the application lifecycle to include: analysis, design, development, quality assurance, documentation and implementation.
Interns acquire invaluable references for college and employment applications. Their real-world experiences draw interest from college admissions officers and scholarship providers. Keeping track of our high-achieving students is rewarding. One intern credits lessons he learned here to being accepted to Harvard. Another intern received a $20,000 scholarship for application design work he performed. Yet another enterprising intern started his own software company while in school.
The program looks to students’ futures by providing them lessons on getting hired, job savvy and personal finance. Interns’ comments collected at program’s end validate that their experiences are eye opening, empowering and, in some cases, life changing.
